SHORT-TERM CONSULTATIONS OR LECTURES FOR J-1 PROFESSOR OR RESEARCHER
The J program normally restricts the Professor or Researcher to employment with
the sponsoring UCSB department. To enable short-term consultations and/or lectures
away from UCSB, the following criteria have been set in the code of Federal Regulations
22CFR 62.20(g):
- Such lectures and consultations must be incidental to the exchange visitor's
primary stated activities (as indicated on the DS-2019):
- they must be directly related to the objectives of the Exchange Visitor's program;
- they must be incidental to the primary Program activities of the Exchange Visitor;
- they may not delay the visitor's Program completion date
Procedures for obtaining authorization:
The Exchange Visitor shall present to the Responsible Officer the following:
- A letter from the prospective employer setting forth: The terms and conditions
of the offer - including the duration; number of hours; field or subject; amount
of compensation; and description of the activity
- A letter from the visitor's UCSB Department Chair/or Institute Director recommending
such activity, and explaining how it would enhance the exchange visitor's program.
Once the above letters are presented to the Scholar Specialist at OISS, the authorization
will be given in writing (provided the criteria are met). Employment can begin only
after the authorization has been granted.
