UCSB students in the F-1 or J-1 student statuses may transfer their immigration
service record in the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to another
U.S. institution.
F-1 Students
To initiate the process, you should complete UCSB’s
TRANSFER OUT FORM FOR F-1 STUDENTS. The form asks you to indicate the date
you want your F-1 record to be released in SEVIS to the new school. Until that date,
UCSB has control over your I-20 and SEVIS record. After that date, the new school
controls your SEVIS record and can prepare its I-20 for you. You may bring the UCSB
“Transfer Out Form” to the OISS Front Counter, fax (893-7132), scan and email to
oiss@sa.ucsb.edu or mail it to the office.
Be certain to list an email address and/or phone number in case we need to contact
you.
The form requires that you provide OISS with a copy of your letter of admission
to your new school. If you are on Optional Practical Training (OPT) when requesting
to transfer to a new school, you will need to also send a copy of your EAD card
with the transfer out form. For those on OPT, please note that the date you request
to be released in SEVIS will be the date your employment authorization ends,
not the date on the EAD card.
The transfer process will not be complete until you report to the international
office at the new school. You are required by immigration service regulations to
check-in with that office no later than 15 days after classes begin. Your F-1 student
status will not be transferred until after the new school reports to SEVIS that
you have arrived. (In other words, the fact that the new school sent you their I-20
does not mean that you have completed the transfer of your F-1 student status to
that school.)
J-1 Students
To initiate the process, you should complete UCSB’s
J-1 STUDENTS TRANSFER OUT FORM. The form asks you to indicate the date you
want your J-1 record released in SEVIS to the new school. Until that date, UCSB
has control over your DS-2019 and SEVIS record. After that date, the new school
controls your SEVIS record and can prepare its DS-2019 for you. You may bring the
UCSB “Transfer Out Form” to the OISS Front Counter, fax (893-7132), scan and email
to oiss@sa.ucsb.edu or mail it to the office.
Be certain to list an email address and/or phone number in case we need to contact
you.
The form requires that you provide OISS with a copy of your letter of admission
to your new school. If you are on Academic Training, please note that the date you
request to be released in SEVIS will be the date your employment authorization ends,
not the date in the Academic Training authorization letter.
The transfer process will not be complete until you report to the international
office at the new school. (In other words, the fact that the new school sent you
their DS-2019 does not mean that you have completed the transfer of your J-1 student
status to that school.)
